Are you ready for a brand new year, & a ‘new feature’ here at ALWR?

I hope this New Year’s morning finds you well, and relatively ‘pain free’. It is the first of January, and with it comes all the hope and promise that a new year holds! This is an ideal time to re-visit the concept of ‘self-care’, and to introduce a new series of posts that will publish every Sunday here at ALWR.

As I’ve stated before, ‘self-care’ is more that just epsom salt baths and flare management. It is a purposeful exercise that involves the mind, will, and emotions. In other words, the ‘heart’. This makes it both personal and limitless.

It could be creating photo-album, re-painting a room, trying out a new recipe, or even binge watching a newly discovered series on Netflix. It is whatever stimulates your mind, and fills your inner being with a sense of purpose & satisfaction.

Every Sunday I will publish a brief post on something I have engaged in for ‘self-care’ during the past week. My goal is to expand our ideas of ‘self-care’ beyond the one-dimensional note of simply ‘resting’. I strongly believe that a main component of disease management (and even healing) involves drawing one’s focus away from what often become an obsession with symptoms andΒ self.

It is vital to our well-being to engage in practices that rouse our creativity, and widen our interests! We may not always be able to escape the direct effects of chronic illness, but we can distract, and even use these effects to create a positiveΒ result. My hope is that this feature will also become a place of discussion and sharingΒ involving YOU!

Send me photos, or drop me a line every week to let me know what you have done in the past week for ‘self-care’! I will feature these in every Sunday’s post. This may involve: sharing recipes, something that you make (especially if you sell the items, I will include links to your site and/or shop!), a poem you wrote, ect. Whatever you would like to share with the community. Let’s share ideas and encouragement as we travel through 2017 together!

‘Self-Care’ Sunday ~January 2017

This week I re-purposed a pair of stools that were headed for the bin. A friend of mine re-inforced the legs, put a ‘no rocking’ bar on them, and sent them back to me. AWESOME! Instead of having to buy new bar stools to the tune of $50 +, I repainted the legs with some left over Sherwin William’s ‘Black Magic’. I then bought a can of Rustoleum ‘Dark Turquoise’ and ‘Green Citrus’ for $5 each. Voila! New Stools for around $10!

    Kristine this Rocks ~~~ I started a new needlepoint project today and instead of doing the basketweave stitch, I’m doing different stitches. Pushing myself outside the box πŸ’πŸ™‹πŸΌπŸΆ

    I really like this, Kristine! I know that it works for me to have something to focus on other than just “resting”! Some times I procrastinate when it comes to starting something, but when I do my whole being becomes in engaged in the activity. This past weekend I tried a new recipe…English pork pies. It was fun to try something that isn’t part of my normal culture, food wise, and to have it turn out. There is still room for improvement, but now I have a base for my learning skill with the recipe.

    Such a wonderful post Kristine:-) I always enjoy reading your blog. After being home for several years with chronic pain I learned how to make primitives and woodcrafts and I have a shop on etsy. I am also learning to quilt from my neighbor and we donate quilts and knitted/crocheted blankets we make to hospitals, vets, and nursing homes. These are all things I can mostly do sitting on the couch and doing things for others like making things to donate can help to give a sense of purpose and helps to step outside the pain, even if for a little while.

    What a wonderful idea. No surprise people are resonating with it πŸ™‚ And those stools are awesome!

    I’m not particularly crafty, but the way I create things for self care best is through writing. I just started a blog and a Facebook page for the blog, which have been good little acts of progress for me so far. and I wrote this guest post this week on writing as self care. I’ll never be able to paint, but I guess I can write! πŸ™‚
