How does the fruit available from June-August bring about health & wellness for your body?

Nature’s sweet medicine is found in the delicious form of summer fruit.  Who doesn’t love a juicy red watermelon, or fragrant ripe peach picked fresh from the tree? The fact that our bodies crave these colorful beauties during the hot summer months is no coincidence. How exactly do these delectable fructose bombs benefit our bodies, and what of the dreaded ‘sugar’ factor we have been conditioned to fear?

We are saturated with information pertaining to health and nutrition. Yet, in spite of this nutritional drenching, due to ‘false’ food beliefs, we are becoming more unhealthy day by day. This is especially true when it comes to sugar. Although the word is made up of five letters, it gets ‘spat’ about as if it contained four.

Sugar as a whole is not your enemy! Providing you do not have certain medical conditions where avoiding sugar is necessary for your health (diabetes ect.), certain sugars are a part of maintaining a balanced state of health & wellness. Here is where our ‘sweet’ little buddies (fruit) come in!

Ironically, given my recent post on ‘Food Shaming’, I have been hearing an abundance of guilty muttering lately coming from people who are happily about to consume their watermelon/pineapple/peach ect. So afraid of the ‘high sugar content’ in their food, all the joy of eating the bounty set before them is drained away. Wow. How did we get here? These foods were created for you to enjoy and be healed by! So……ENJOY them dammit! Slurp down your stinkin’ watermelon and smile!

    I love that photo of the watermelon bicycle.

    Kristine, I love this. I am in the midst of craving all kinds of fruit. In the winter I don’t as much, but as soon as the sun starts shining I’m all about it! This week we’ve had GF blueberry cobbler topped with Blackberry frozen yogurt, and I’ve made mango/strawberry smoothies, fresh lemonade and lemon curd! LOL All about the fruit. And as long as we don’t overload on granulated sugar I’m not too worried. Nature is full of great things to eat, and in summer the fruit helps me stay dehydrated and that natural boost of sugar helps in the heat.

    Plus berries are really good for keeping my blood thin, so I try to eat them as often as I can.

    BTW I think I need a bike with watermelon wheels! Love that image!

      I love summer fruit too, but I have to admit that as soon as January hits, my citrus cravings go through the roof! Could be that it is ‘cold and flu’ season, or my body rebeling against all the crap I ate in December! LOL! Thanks Nikki 😉
