School has begun again. The sun sets a little sooner in the evening. In stores the bright colors of the waning season have been replaced with the muted tones of approaching autumn. We have another 8 wks left of ninety plus degree heat here in the desert, but we still adjust our internal clocks with one eye on the calendar. We are getting ready to say ‘goodbye’ to summer, and we couldn’t be happier.
You see, what the upper Midwest and east part of the country experience in Jan/Feb/Mar, we here in the Southwest desert experience from July to the end of October. I’m talking about those months where you are fairly house bound by the weather. We experience a type of ‘cabin fever’ in the late summer, just as those who are snow-bound experience in the last days of winter. It’s a wonderful feeling come mid October, when we can finally open our windows again. Although the air conditioner still blows during the day, when the sun starts to set we can let in the cool evening air. Only a month and a half to go…
Now is the time to use up those final summer fruits while they are still available. Below is a peach/strawberry smoothie made with ‘orange milk’ from a local dairy here in West Phoenix. They sell different flavors of freshly drawn milk that make perfect bases for smoothies, as well as ‘root-beer milk’ that tastes like a melted float (my favorite).
~1/2 cup strawberries
~1 cup ‘orange milk’ or (1 cup whole milk and 1 tbsp. orange juice concentrate)
~1 Tbsp raw organic local honey
~4-5 ice cubes
Blend all together.
