Fibromyalgia Awareness Day is the day of the year that is set aside to bring attention & focus to a misunderstood & too often unacknowledged disease that affects millions of people all around the world

If you’re here reading this, you probably have a fairly good idea of what FMS is, or at least how it manifests either in yourself or someone you know.

Let’s look at a few of the less known facts about Fibromyalgia:

  • FMS is the leading chronic illness in the United States ~ Over 5 million people are diagnosed with FMS in America, with 80% of these being women

  • IBS may be an early indicator ~ 80% of FMS patients suffer digestive issues

  • Tobacco exacerbates symptoms ~ People with FMS who smoke suffer greater symptomatic distress

  • Perspiration Accumulation! ~ It is not unusual for people with FMS to experience excessive sweating due to increased body temps

  • Appearance Of Lipomas ~ These are lumps under the skin that often appear in FMS patients. These are benign tumors that never the less can be painful with Fibromayalgia.

  • ‘Smell’ To The Max! ~ Many people will have a heightened sense of smell due to the sensory overload we often experience

  • Vit D May Be Lacking ~ Most people have a Vit D deficiency, but more so with FMS patients. See your Dr. to inquire if Vit D would be a helpful supplement for you.

  • Hyper Sensory Sensitvity ~ Bright lights and loud noises may be extremely annoying

And yet there are many, many people (including doctors) who still claim it’s “all in our heads”. At least things are better than several years ago, when a Fibro “expert” at the Univ. of Penn no less, told me it’s a just a trash basket diagnosis. He insisted that I must have been physically (or maybe even sexually?) abused as a child because that will later cause these symptoms to appear. Can you believe this guy? At least he is long retired now….
