Eating Chocolate Benefits Your Health?! ~ 4 Ways Chocolate Improves Your Well-Being!

Think food has to be like ‘tasteless cardboard’ to be good for you? Think again!

Eating chocolate benefits your health?! Yes! It’s true! One of Nature’s greatest gifts is one of mankind’s sweetest medicines. Chocolate lover’s rejoice! Could there be a more fitting topic thank this for today’s post? Tomorrow is the International Chocolate Holiday (aka: Valentine’s Day), and what better time to look at the health benefits of chocolate?

Before we get started though, let me throw in a caveat. If you are a lover of ultra sweet light milk chocolate, this post may not excite you in the beginning. The benefits of eating chocolate only come from that which is high in cacao, or the extract from the bean itself. The higher the cacao, the more bitter notes in the chocolate. However, a good 60% bar with a bit of added sugar is still palatable and delicious! (Not to mention, oh so satisfying!)

No, SERIOUSLY! You can reap delicious health benefits from chocolate high in cacao! Click To Tweet

  1. Improves Metabolism! ~ A study performed at the Queen Margaret University showed that dark chocolate affected carbohydrate and fat metabolism.

  2. Controls Appetite! ~ Dark chocolate decreases insulin resistance. It also creates a feeling of satiety, which tells the brain to eat less and stop. Try eating a small wedge of dark (70% or up) 10 minutes before lunch and dinner. See what happens!

  3. Improves Blood Pressure! ~ Dark chocolate contains  plant phenols, or cocoa phenols. These compounds have been shown to lower blood pressure.

  4. Disease Fighting Properties! ~ These come in the form of antioxidants. These bad boys eat up free radicals that are the destructive molecules responsible for heart disease and other nasty conditions.

Christine, you and I were both on the same page this week. I have been craving chocolate and I put together nine recipes to improve your sanity. I agree that chocolate should be a staple in your diet, shoot for the highest cocoa content that you can and reap the health benefits. Now I’m off to enjoy my bit of chocolate for the day. Hope you had yours!

Kristine, I am using my voice to text to write this comment, and I forgot to go back and correct the misspelling of your name. Please forgive me.

I will take the spoon in that picture above! I love dark chocolate! I recently discovered Ghirardelli 60% Cacao Baking Chips, they’re so good! I mix a few with a handful of almonds for a snack. Tastes like a candy bar 🙂
