Alas, Poor ‘Nightshade’, I Knew Him, Horatio… ~ Inflammatory Foods In FMS

Yes, apparently I have developed an intolerance to one of my favorite foods, the tomato.  This seems to be a fairly common stomach prejudice due to the nightshade’s acidity and neurotoxins.  ‘Neurotoxins and Nightshades’, sounds like a new King novel.

Inflammatory Foods & Chronic Illness

After enduring severe IBS symptoms brought on by pasta sauce and a tomato based soup, I’ve decided to refrain from partaking in the pleasures of this delightful little fruit.  Bummer.  I eat fresh tomatoes like candy.  Well, I plan on experimenting a little, I’ve got some cherry tomatoes ripening on the vine in back right now.  I plan on popping those little babies back as soon as they’re done.  AND, I have an eggplant in the fridge awaiting it’s debut in a new recipe.  I’m a glutton for punishment.

Edibles in the nightshade family have also caused a bit of controversy in the health community.  Those with Arthritis, FMS, ME, and other inflammatory conditions claim their symptoms worsen when these foods are included in their diet.  Some in the medical  community say there is no scientific evidence for this…sound like a familiar argument?

All I know is, that ship sailed a choppy and stormy sea in my belly last night, and I have no wish to repeat the incidents anytime soon. Here’s to hoping tomatoes in raw form will be better digested than cooked.  Any thoughts on the subject or experiences/advice you’d like to share? Recipe of the week~

~Rotisserie Chicken & Mushroom Macaroni Alfredo~

~1 cup (or more) chopped leftover rotisserie chicken

~8-10 fresh sliced mushrooms of choice

~2 tbsp. olive oil

~splash of white wine

~1 1/2 cup large elbow macaroni (or any pasta of choice)

~1 tbsp. butter

~2 minced garlic cloves

~1 cup half n half

~1/3 cup fresh grated parmesan cheese

~1 egg yolk

~1/8 cup white wine

~oregano, red pepper flakes, salt, pepper

Cook and drain macaroni.  Sauté mushrooms in oil and add splash of white wine, set aside.  In saucepan sauté garlic in butter, add half n half cook till simmering.  Remove from heat and stir in yolk, wine, cheese, and spices.  Return to low heat and stir until thickened.  Pour over pasta, chicken, and mushrooms.  Stir to incorporate.

    I did a month of no nightshades, no gluten, no dairy, no sugar, basically a month of HELL! Did anything change? Lost a few pounds, slept better, but I found that pushing this “reset” button of nutrition actually did help digestive issues. (My issue is Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis) Sometimes a month of cleaning things out really does reset the body! 🙂 Life without salsa is not living!

    Hi, Kristine ~ I’m in denial, but I’m pretty sure I have a similar intolerance. I’m gearing up for a full-scale reset in hopes that it will help my Hashimoto’s and Addison’s Disease. But I’m dreading it, because I’m like you, and I eat tomatoes all the time! :0) This recipe sounds delicious, though, and that might help my denial move along.       Ha! Ha! You’re welcome Tiffany! I know it’s tough. I gave up gluten for awhile when I thought what I had was thyroid related. The world has become very kind to those who wish to live ‘gluten free’ though. You’ll have more options than you may think you will, and it will definitely help. I have a friend with Hashimoto’s and because gluten triggers the immune response with that disease, changing her diet has helped tremendously. You are on your way to feeling better, with or without our buddy ‘Nightshade’! 😉

      Tomatoes do change chemically when cooked, they are a weird and wondrous fruit! 😉

    This post definitely resonates with me. I suffer from Hashimoto’s and have multiple food intolerances. For me, eating the offending food triggers digestive issues, flares up my autoimmune symptoms and causes chronic pain so I stay away from them. I always thought that I had an issue with tomatoes so I avoided them mostly, but during a recent visit to Europe I ate raw tomatoes like everyday and I was fine! So perhaps there is a difference between cooked and raw tomatoes. Or as Debra commented pushing the ‘reset’ button helps. Well, there is only way to find out, eat some deliciously cooked tomatoes 🙂 Thanks for sharing this post!

      That’s really interesting about Europe. I saw a news story earlier in the year on people with gluten sensitivities who had traveled to Europe, ate bread there, and were fine.
